Introducing: "Sabbie's Crabbies"!

Just for the record, I was not the one who thought of calling my posts “Sabbie’s Crabbies,” but I thought it was just too perfectly full of cheese not to use. How could I pass up this opportunity?!

Anyways, here’s my personal project that I’ve been working on for the last month and a half! I decided sometime right before finals started that I wanted hermit crabs and when I started researching how to care for them, let’s just say…things got a little crazy. By the time the last week of crits came around, I started to be known as the crazy crab girl among all of my college friends and I hadn’t even gotten my crabs yet!

I’ve spent some time setting up my “crabitat,” using the boyfriend as an assistant on all of my pet store excursions and getting all of the substrate ready.

For all you hermit crab enthusiasts out there, here are my crabitat specs that you can review:

15 gallon glass tank with a screen lid that slides and locks into place
An average 86% humidity and 77 degree F temperature, both fluctuating about 2-3 units each way as the day wears on
Approximately 20-ish shells for them to choose from, with round and D-shaped openings
A freshwater and saltwater bowl, both treated with TopFin water conditioner that specifically removes chlorine/chloramides, ammonia, and heavy metals, and I use Instant Ocean to make my saltwater…salty xD
I do not give them any commercially produced “hermit crab” foods
Substrate is made up of 5.5-inches of pure sand sloping to 9-inches of sand and coconut husk (Eco-Earth) mix
Still working on adding climbing decor and a second level!

The very first crabs I got were from the new PetCo that just opened up in my town: one Purple Pincher (the Powerpuff Girls shell) and one Ecuadorian (the Batman shell).

My purple pincher, named Pip, was a surprisingly active little guy. I’m pretty sure he’s a he, but he’s missing his back-most shield leg so I only have the one leg to go on, but I don’t think I saw any gonopore spots so…we’re just gonna go with “boy” for now!

Poor guy is missing a whole limb and pretty good chunks of at least two more. He’s been pretty lethargic lately, so I’m hoping for a molt sometime soon so he can regrow his limbs!

Pip is also the only one of my hermit crabs to change shells! Go him for ditching that unhealthy painted one xP

My first Ecuadorian, Bruce, was named by the boyfriend for his Batman shell and the fact that I got him on Batman’s birthday without even knowing about it. It’s “fate,” according to my Puppy, so I let his name be Bruce.

Super active and has QUITE a personality. Also, he’s kind of sulky towards me because of the baths I gave him to check for mites when I first got them :(

As you can see, Bruce is quite the daredevil; climbing to the highest point in the tank and also digging half-way all around the crabitat through 9-inch substrate! He’s just go-go-go all the time.

Today I went out and bought TWO more crabs, this time from our local Pet Supplies Plus.

This is Spook, a purple pincher; he’s the tiniest and the shyest, but he comes out for me after a bit ^_^ Also, I’m not entirely convinced about his gender. I checked, but he still hasn’t pulled out far enough for me to be 100% sure…

My second Ecuradorian, Alfie, is surprisingly shy for his species and is super skittish as he RUNS the opposite direction whenever he sees me coming. He’s in a shell that’s much too small for him, but from what I’ve read about his species, I won’t hold my breath for a shell change anytime soon.

Some final words: I think I’m a little addicted. The boyfriend has been SO patient with my new-found obsession and I’m having so much fun taking care of them.

If anyone is thinking about getting hermit crabs as pets, I would highly recommend the Hermit Crab Association forum for all of your research needs. Not only is it extremely helpful in giving you all the information you need to give your crabs a long and healthy life (20-30 years in captivity! Wow!), but it’s just a ridiculously interesting read as well!

Now, when we go out to eat sushi, I’ll eat whatever you put in a sushi roll. But at home, when we make our own rolls, I will always ask for my super plain rolls that I ate as a super picky, little girl and wouldn’t accept anything in my “sushi” except for seaweed, rice, and mayo xD
